Today, July 15, Ukraine marks the Day of Ukrainian Statehood for the fifth time — one of the country's youngest holidays, yet already deeply symbolic.
The roots of Ukrainian statehood reach back to the era of Kyivan Rus and Prince Volodymyr the Great, who in 988 accepted Christianity and set the civilizational course of our people for centuries to come. From Rus to the Cossack Hetmanate, from the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) and the West Ukrainian People's Republic (ZUNR) to today's independent Ukraine — the path has been long and difficult, yet it has always led toward one goal: to live free on our own land.
Statehood is more than historical dates and decrees. It is our language, culture, traditions, and values — the things that unite Ukrainians through every trial of time. Today, as Ukraine defends its right to exist against a full-scale invasion, this unity and historical memory matter more than ever.
We gratefully remember all those who built and defended the Ukrainian state throughout the centuries, and we bow to those defending it today — on the front lines and at home. It is thanks to their courage that we are able to study, work, and build a future in a free country.
